The Hygiene package makes a difference

When the girls are offered education they also become aware of their rights and they are strengthened as individuals. Education is not only a right, but also a key to independence. Many girls who grow up in the countryside lack what we take for granted, such as panties and pads, and earlier when the girls got their period they were absent from school. The Hygiene package has changed that and helps girls to continue going to school even during their period, since the packages are distributed once a month during the semester. For each year a girl goes to school, her future income is increasing by 10 percent.

Together with nurses connected to the village schools, the girls are informed about how they are to take care of themselves and their hygiene during their period. Thanks to these conversations it becomes natural to touch subjects such as genital mutilation, contraceptives, child marriages and pregnancies. The Hygiene package contains panties, pads, soap, ointments and paracetamol and the cost for one girl is 400 SEK for a whole year.
